Sherman
July 2009

We adopted Sherman from CSR on July 12, 2008. This sweet little dog, with thyroid problems, was a real joy, for the short time that we had him. He was a great little friend, and loved to chase after squirrels, lizards and bugs, when he went outside to his yard. He was very eager to travel anywhere with us, but always got excited, when he realized, he was back home, in his own little bed, in our room. He was very entertaining and loving, and greeted visitors warmly.

Sherman started losing weight, and interest in his favorite activities, about the first of 2009. Our vet claimed he had a bacterial infection, and gave us medicine for that, along with his thyroid pills each day. He kept getting worse, and the vet did more tests. Then, he said Sherman had congestive heart failure, and sent us home with more meds for that. None of this helped Sherman, and he kept getting weaker, and getting very skinny.

We took Sherman to a small animal vet in Victoria, for a second opinion. She examined him, did some tests, and X-rayed his swollen abdomen. She showed us the X-ray of the cancers in his spleen and liver, which had spread to his lungs and intestines. She did say that earlier detection would not have made any difference; surgeries on this type of blood-spread cancer rarely buy any more time for the dog.

Two weeks later, our Sherman crossed the Rainbow Bridge. My heart won't stop aching, but I believe he is now hunting and chasing rabbits, with our other cocker boy who died a year before. I miss them both so much. When does the pain stop ??
