Kassie
October 19, 2004

I knew it was time to add another rescue cocker to our home. It had been about 4 months since we'd lost Sophie. I would browse the Cocker Spaniel Rescue site reading all the stories about the cockers in need. So many stories........so many tears.

The day we met Kassie (formerly Lucy), I fell instantly in love with her. Judy at Cocker Spaniel Rescue had told us to bring our other cocker, Kara to see how they 'meshed'. We took them both for a walk along the road, and knew at once she belonged with us.

She was a tiny girl, but in time filled out! She loved her treats in the morning. During the day, she always sat near me, or followed me around, and at night, she was right up on our bed along with Kara. She was a momma's girl, and Kara was Daddy's girl....I remember being frustrated by how hard it was to get a great picture of her, being she was so jet black, and it was hard to make out her precious face in a picture. She had a tail that wagged floppily, like there was too much skin left on it! How cute it was! She had a wonderful laid-back personality. Everyone was her friend, she loved attention from anyone...adults, children, other dogs.....We called her Kassie-Kow affectionately, for when she ran, she seemed to have this gait like a cow running slowly!

Last Christmas Kassie had a seizure, and we wondered at that time whether she'd make it through to the new year. We were blessed with a seizure free year until just about two months ago. They seemed to return out of nowhere, and then a stroke. When we knew her time had come, I could only think that I was so thankful to have had her for almost a full year longer than we thought we might. We knew that she had had a wonderful loving home with us for the years that she did, and that life was very good for this little girl who had come to us so quiet and shy. I know that she is in a better place now, and know that as a responsible pet owner and lover, that sometimes we have to know when to love them enough to say goodbye. She will always be missed and loved, but will always held in our hearts and memories.

Our thanks go out to all of the volunteers at the East Texas Cocker Spaniel Rescue for all that you do to make the lives of these precious animals better, in helping them find forever homes.
